The engine is the part of Capture that reads a channel’s live source and writes its recordings. It is not something you create or manage, and it improves over time. Its version decides which recording settings and channel settings a channel can have. In the API, those settings are free-form fields, each following a schema of the engine version: the recording settings of a channel or of a template, and a channel’s own settings. The pages under each version list its schemas, field by field. Recording settings that do not follow their schema are stored all the same and reported as not valid for recording, which keeps the channel draft; channel settings that do not follow theirs are refused.

One version today: current

There is a single engine version today, listed as current, and recording settings cannot pin any other. Every channel follows current, so when the engine gains a setting, the schemas here gain it too. The engine_version field of recording settings exists for the day a version can be pinned. Leave it empty; the channel follows the current engine either way.
