The engine is the part of Live Sources that receives and analyses your streams. It is not something you create or manage, and it improves over time. Its version decides which settings a source can have and what the service reports about its stream. In the API, those settings and reports are free-form fields of a source, each following a schema of the source’s engine version: a settings schema says what you can send, a report schema what you will read. The pages under each version list its schemas, field by field. The API refuses settings that do not follow their schema.

One version today: current

There is a single engine version today, listed as current, and a source cannot be pinned to any other. Every source follows current, so when the engine gains a setting, the schemas here gain it too. The engine_version field of a source exists for the day a source can pin a version. Leave it out; the source follows the current engine either way.
