# Structure

> How a recording settings document is put together.

A settings document is a list of `outputs`, one per file to write. Each output says where it goes and under what name, and carries `formatSettings`: the container `format`, that format's own settings under `general`, and one entry per track under `video` and `audio`. Each track says which source track it applies to, whether it is recorded, and its codec in `format`.

Choosing a format or a codec brings that choice's own settings with it, alongside the `format` that chose them. The pages here document each container format's settings and each codec's, and say where they land. Field names are written as they appear in the JSON, so `fileName` rather than `file_name`.
